The Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne

The Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne (EHL) has recently undergone a dynamic programme of revitalization to prepare for a truly exciting future. In addition to an internationally recognized label of quality the school now offers its students an array of outstanding new benefits. The school's mission is to educate students for top management positions in the international hospitality industry, especially in leading hotels, restaurants and hotel chains. With more than a century of teaching experience the schools is an institution steeped in traditions as rich as the most venerable hotels around the world. At Lausanne, one feels a unique, round-the-clock mix between the academic and the practical.
Reinforcing its excellent links with practioners EHL also calls upon outside experts to come to Lausanne to teach special modules. These professionals bring a fresh, very practical approach to each discipline, enabling the students to learn about the very latest trends in specific industry segments and share the latest ideas being developed in many areas.

The Wine Society

The tastings of the Wine Society of The Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne (EHL) are held by Gregor Drescher, managing editor and head taster of VinVinoLife. VinVinoLife is thus an official partner of the Wine Society. The wine society works on a membership basis.
The tastings of the Wine Society are very interactive so that every student is encouraged to participate. There are two tasting modules per semester including two seminars and guided tastings during which the students are introduced in the most important international wine regions and wines. The aim is to understand both the wines and the concept of their winemaking.

The Beringer Salle de Dégustation

In 1999, EHL inaugurated a new wine-tasting facility, created with the support of the California-based wine producer Beringer. This modern wine laboratory gives Lausanne students the chance to learn about wines in a professional atmosphere, under ideal conditions.

"It was rather busy last week with two exciting tastings guided by Mr Drescher. A total of 11 hours of wine tasting and 31 wines during the Thursday, May 21st, and Friday, June 1st, tastings were dedicated to wine production in Bordeaux and Australia." (The Voice, Volume 2, Issue 5, 2001).

"The aim of the Bordeaux tasting (Thursday, May 21st, and Friday, June 1st) was to get a feeling for the grape varieties used for red wines in Bordeaux. To emphasize this point Mr Drescher had prepared among others a vertical tasting of the 1998 vintage and the fabulous 1990 vintage of the following wines: Fourcas-Dupré, Palmer, Pichon Comtesse de Lalande and Mouton Rothschild. Other wines that must be mentioned were Clos de l´Oratoire 1998 and Canon La Gaffelière 1998." (The Voice, Volume 2, Issue 5, 2001).

"… a festival of aromas and rich, entertaining and educational interaction" (The Voice, Volume 2, Issue 5, 2001).

"Another element that continuously resurfaced was the idea of marketing and the importance of brands for the winemakers." (The Voice, Volume 2, Issue 5, 2001).

"Gregor Drescher´s dynamic and accessible way of speaking made the evenings ones of discovery…" (The Voice, Volume 2, Issue 5, 2001).

"Gisle Sarheim, who met Mr Drescher during his first internship in the Maldives forged the association between the Wine Society and VinVinoLife. To our benefit now, the impression made by Gisle encouraged Mr Drescher to pursue this relationship. The VinVinoLife and Wine Society collaboration provides a unique opportunity to students to broaden their wine knowledge and experience wines they may not ordinarily be able to." (The Voice, Volume 2, Issue 5, 2001).
